In today’s blog we will be analysing the classic but strangely wet 2008 Italian Grand Prix at Monza in Italy. The race started under very heavy wet conditions with it being so wet infact the race had to be started behind the Safety Car with the youngest pole sitter in the history of Formula 1, Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel getting the Italian Grand Prix underway just a few minutes later. But the wet conditions did not stop the drivers from overtaking Renault driver Fernando Alonso got past Timo Glock in the Toyota with World Championship leader and Mclaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton managing to fight his way past the Scuderia Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen also. But Hamilton was not done there as very quickly passed a BMW of Nick Heidfeld, Both Toyota’s of Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock and the Renault of Fernando Alonso when suddenly his charge was halted as Mclaren driver Lewis Hamilton was forced to pit for some more fuel along with the man out front Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel.
But just a few laps after everybody’s first round of pit stops, all the drivers had to pit again this time for intermediates which really cost Mclaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton any hope of him getting onto the famous Monza podium. Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen would then become the fastest moving driver through the field as he started to pass Toyota’s and Williams’ a like but for Lewis Hamilton he was now being forced to defend for his position from Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber who had spun ahead of Hamilton just a few laps before. But Mclaren driver Lewis Hamilton would get quite rude with Aussie Red Bull driver Mark Webber by unintentionally pushing him off the track at the first Monza chicane. But through all the rain and chaos of it all Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel would go on to win the 2008 Italian Grand Prix and become the youngest ever F1 race winner at the time with this race also being Scuderia Toro Rosso’s first and so far only victory in Formula 1. Due to the weather and the fact this was the first race win of a true Formula 1 legend in current Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, this race will always go down as an absolute classic.
